Types and Principles of Humidifiers

19 Aug 2020

Humidity refers to relative humidity. Every time people gets the number from the weather forecast, the percentage to the relative humidity is a measure of air humidity. The lower this number is, the drier the air is, and the low to a certain extent, people will feel uncomfortable. Generally speaking, relative humidity can be understood as the amount of moisture in the air.

In summer, the household air conditioner will drain water out when it is working. In fact, it is doing dehumidification work to reduce the "moisture" in the air. Because the air is too "moist" in summer. If you don’t start the refrigeration, just start the "dehumidification function" to make people feel cool. When the humidity drops, people’s sweat will be discharged more smoothly, and of course, they will feel cool. That is why the air conditioner have the function of "dehumidification". It's a pity that this is for summer, and in winter we can only think of other ways.

The function of the humidifier is to increase the relative humidity of the small indoor environment in the air at home, making people's life more comfortable. At present, the common humidifiers on the market have the following three working methods, and the purpose is to increase the humidity, which can be described as "different ways to achieve the same goal".

Thermal humidification type

The working principle of this kind of humidifier is simple. To put it bluntly, it is to boil the water, so that the water becomes steam and is emitted into the room to achieve the purpose of humidification. This type of humidifier has the biggest advantage, that is, it must be aseptic humidification, with extremely high purity, and it is indeed a "pure humidifier". Due to the principle of this humidification method, the generated water vapor can also rise to a sufficient height indoors, so that the "benefit" range of the second type of humidifier is expanded. In addition, water vapor is actually invisible to humans. The white "water vapor" that we can see in the past is nothing but water mist spreading in the air. Another advantage of this type of humidifier is that it is easier to maintain and to achieve large humidification.

The main disadvantage of this type of humidifier is that it consumes a lot of power. The general design needs almost 200 or 300 watts, and it consumes 3 kWh or even more in one night. Due to the sufficient power supply in western countries, most of these humidifiers are used there.

Ultrasonic humidification type

Ultrasound refers to "sound" waves with frequencies beyond the audible range of the human ear. It is still a mechanical wave that propagates in objects in the form of longitudinal waves. The working principle of an ultrasonic humidifier is to use a transducer to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy, atomize the water with a quick shock and disperse it into the air. In this way, the purpose of humidification is achieved.

The main advantage of this type of humidifier is that it saves electricity. Due to the high efficiency of the transducer and the circuit, the power consumption of this type of humidifier is only 30 or 40 watts. It can't use half a kilowatt-hour of electricity overnight, which is indeed very economical. Its humidification work is also very intuitive, and the white mist makes people very comfortable. However, the humidification capacity of this kind of humidifier is not too large, and it is generally suitable for use in small bedrooms. Due to the limitation of the working principle, although the water mist looks very beautiful, the scope of benefit is not large.

Ultrasonic humidification

The main disadvantage of this type of humidifier is frequent maintenance. Generally, you need upkeep within every four or five days, because a layer of green moss will soon form on the potassium sodium tartrate crystal transducer, which directly affect the atomization, the water mist will be gone! Fortunately, various manufacturers provide cleaning agents for random sale, and the cleaning work is not troublesome, and it is easy to master. Another disadvantage of this type of humidifier is that it is easy to form secondary air pollution. If it is not cleaned in place and the water quality is not good, it is harmful to human health. It is better to use cool boiled water, so that it is not easy to leave white powder in front of the humidifier.

According to an authoritative person on medical equipment, secondary pollution caused by improper cleaning of medical ultrasonic atomizers (which are consistent with the principle and composition of household ultrasonic humidifiers) is closely related to the increase in respiratory infections in children in winter.

Fan humidification type

A typical feature of this type of humidifier is to use a low-noise fan inside the humidifier. Its working principle is to use a towel-like super absorbent to absorb moisture first, at the same time allow the fan to continuously force circulating air to take away the moisture and radiate into the air. This type of humidifier is generally exquisite in design, can maintain the balance of the water surface. It has no unbearable noise, and has a large amount of humidification. This method also makes the humidification process more pure, so some manufacturers also call it a "pure" type.

Its main advantage is that it saves electricity and because of forced air circulation, it can partially purify the air. The disadvantage is that high-quality fans must be used, so the price is high, and maintenance work is also required, but it is not as frequent as the maintenance required for ultrasonic humidifiers.

Fan humidification

It is much easier for you to choose after understanding the above working principles. If you don’t care about power consumption, you can choose an electric humidifier, which is easier to use and has a large amount of humidification. If you are more diligent, of course, you can choose an ultrasonic humidifier with more maintenance or if you have a higher budget, choosing fan humidification Type also is a good choice.
